Welcome to the website of Metz.
with recent information about Metz and the Flower Market
This month the Metz Group achieved a net growth of 10%. What was remarkable were the large discrepancies in performance between the various markets. In Spain – which was already economically having a tough time – demand dissolved (due to the road blocks of trucks protesting high gas prices). The export to the United Kingdom was brisk in pounds, however this was not the case once we (had to) covert it to euro’s. France, Italy, Austria and Switzerland showed fine growth. The USA and Canada grew significantly, although one must add that the percentage of Dutch product sold due to the strong euro has decreased for the first time below 50%. This is being offset by our sources in Ecuador, Columbia, California, Ontario and New Zeeland.
We don’t expect July 2008 to be a bad month, although we would be surprised if we achieved the same growth of the autumn-like July of last year.

As of today we offer a new feature with Iris Online: a search engine. Although our Iris system is easy to use and conveniently arranged, we have had some requests for a search function. Today we present phase 1, this means you can search products by their name or parts of their name.
We hope this new tool will reduce your ordering time online and give you the option to find those special products you really need. Behind the scenes we are working very hard on phase 2. This means you will be able to search on colour, length and price!

Not only were over 200 Irish florists entertained and inspired by top designers Joke Maat and Miranda ter Voorde but they had a chance to win €500 as well!
The show held at the Heritage Hotel, Portlaoise on Sunday 20th April was a packed day of wedding demonstrations, competitions and a chance for the florists to do some valuable networking amongst themselves and to meet the Metz Team from Holland. Also available to purchase was the new exclusive Spring Collection of sundries at a 10% discount.
For the first time, METZ hosted their first Wedding Bouquet Competition, judged by the two designers and Caroline Marshall-Foster.
With over 30 entries from all over Ireland, the competition was fierce and a real credit to all the entrants. In fact, so impressed were the judges by some of the designs they decided to award four highly commended placements and a runner up as well as the overall winner :-

Metz would also like to thank Dutch Creations, Society of Floristry, Florist and Wholesale Buyer, the Flower Council of Holland for making this show so successful.
The raffle at the end collected 755 euros for the Barretstown Serious Fun charity. Thanks to everyone who gave so generously!

From the reaction that we have had from our customers, it seems that everybody thoroughly enjoyed the show and went away with many fresh ideas and bundles of enthusiasm.
We at Metz were proud to say that our stand was better than ever, befitting our 10th anniversary celebrations, and our beautiful displays of flowers, including Valentine roses, plants and sundries held the interest of all visitors to our stand and a brisk trade was done on both days. It was so good to see so many of our customers and to have time over a drink to talk in length, which is often so difficult in your shops on a busy working day.
The multi-cultural, 50 minute, wedding teach-ins, Christian, Jewish, Hindu and Muslim in conjunction with the SFE and Metz, were a huge success for the lucky ones who attended and these will continue around the country throughout 2008. So watch this space!

Metz and Fleura, two of Europe’s biggest wholesalers to independent florists, have announced a new partnership that will enable us to globally source flower and foliage at even more competitive prices for our florist customers.
The partnership, which will be based on a 50/50 shareholding of a new company known as Metz-Fleura, will enable the two companies to link into each others areas of strength and combined buying power.
Commenting on the move, Pim van Kleef told Florist & Wholesale Buyer: “Obviously our Dutch sourcing lines are the very best but when it comes to buying globally Metz are incredibly strong in certain countries, like Ecuador while Fleura have superb links in places like San Remo and Costa Rica. By joining forces we will be able to share our buying skill base and ensure that we are able to offer our florists the very best products from throughout the world at the very best prices.”
Between the two companies more than 20,000 florist customers in the mid to hi-end bracket will benefit from the improved buying power the partnership will achieve, particularly important at a time when price fluctuations are affecting florists throughout the world.

On Wednesday, October 3rd, at precisely 3:15 in the afternoon, construction began on the new Metz entrance hall at Head Office in Holland, when the 1st pole was officially laid. In the ceremony, J.P. Teelen, the General Director of FloraHolland, together with the Directors of Metz, did the honours.
Metz strongly believes in it's partnership with the auction FloraHolland and respective growers. This important investment in the Elsen Building will only serve to emphasize this.
The new entrance should be completed by June 2008.

As many of you know out of experience, cold can be disastrous to the quality of fresh flowers and plants.
Especially to exotics and anthuriums which suffer the most during winter time. We are currently protecting
exotics and anthuriums by using polystyrene in the boxes, which is not ideal and can cause breakages or bruising
to the flowers. On account of Metz striving for perfection, we have searched for a new way of frost packing.
After many tests and trials we found the perfect way to protect sensitive flowers from the weather. Anthuriums
will from now on be packed in flow packs similar to the method used on cut hydrangeas. The innovative foil will
provide a better insulation, which keeps the warmth within the box. This way we can deliver you the exotics and
others without any cold damage throughout the winter!
With the new flow pack there is less polystyrene and other protective material needed, which results directly in
a cost decrease and a general improvement for the environment. With the automised packing we can achieve more
efficiency and also prevent breakages caused by human handling.
So whenever the cold kicks in, watch out for the frost packing!

After the flow-packing of all Hydrangeas was introduced last year with a great deal of success and approval from the customer , the packaging of the Callas became the next variety to be improved . The reason for this change being that each year more than 100,000 Callas are sold, making it more than worthwhile to conduct a careful analysis of it.
Click for a larger image. | At Previously, the Callas were painstakingly taped to the box. This was an inefficient, and hence, an expensive exercise. Not only expensive in the sense of labour, but also expensive due to the amount of empty space one is transporting in each box. Consequently, something needed to be developed whereby less volume would be lost, but at the same time, safeguarding the condition of the Calla. The solution of this developed in the shape of a tube-like structure which can easily and quickly be assembled in two simple actions. The tube ensures that the flower will not bend while in transit and at the same time reduces labour. The process also uses less packaging material which is more friendly to the environment. The tubes will always be placed on top of the crate, unless they are being packed with other boxes, From June 1, 2006, all Callas from Holland have been packed in this new way!
