31-07-09 Fishing with the Boys

What has slowly turned into an annual tradition, Martin, the Director of Metz USA, went fishing this past Sunday with Steven Kanata, Marco Fernandes, and the rest of the gang from Glen Head Flower Shop and Flowers of NYC. They got up at the crack off dawn, met for breakfast, and loaded up the boat. Stret, the Captain, navigated the boat deep into the ocean. The weather was foggy and the waves were high (more so than previous years). The day was spent exactly as it should have been, with a lot of fishing and even more laughing. It is important to note that until these fishing expeditions began, Martin, who had never held a fishing rod before in his life, had no idea what striped bass was, let alone ever caught one. Now he can say that he managed to not only hook one striped bass, but two! The picture was taken as proof for his wife.

07-07-09 Merger Fleura and Metz

Fleura and Metz merged on 3rd July 2009 after a 9 month period of negotations. The merger will operate under the name Fleura-Metz.

The new company has the ambition to be the best partner for florists in Europe and North America and will use it's size to realize advantages at the following levels: sourcing, logistics, IT and marketing. Fleura-Metz will be the link in the chain between florists and growers from around the world and the effect will be a shorter and more efficient chain. This integration and size will give the best basis for innovations, particularly on a marketing level. Fleura-Metz prime aim is to strengthen the position of the florist.

Fleura-Metz management will be operating from two headquarters: Westland and Aalsmeer. The merger will be led by Robert Kalter and Frank Koenen and will continue in the market with the known brands such as Metz, Fleura, HBI, Hottinger and Scala Verde.

Fleura-Metz has a turnover of around 300 million euro and delivers to 25.000 customers in Europe and North-America. The group has 54 cash & carry's and uses the online ordering system Iris. Fleura-Metz provides jobs for 1000 people and is a partner of MFI.

11-05-09 THE BET

At the tail end of last year, Michael Chugranis came to work for us as our newest Account Manager. Led by Tom Yaiser, our Sales Director, Michael set-out to build his territory in New York and New Jersey. It wasn't long before the two struck up the most unlikely - and original - of bet's. If Michael was able to meet his ambitious sales goals by Mother's Day, then Tom would have to shave his head. If he lost, then Michael would have to dress like Tom for a period of three months.

Sure enough, Michael won. Click here to see the action. As you will see, we the team, loved every single minute of it.

27-01-09 INTRODUCING ‘METZ BASICS' - A NEW WAY TO BUY YOUR FLOWERS A LITTLE SMARTER!

We're proud to introduce a new buying concept aptly named ‘Metz Basics'. It allows our customers (that means you!) to buy your flowers a little less expensively.

How does it work?

There are many times that a florist is looking for a very specific color in a flower. For example, a tangerine shade of orange gerbera with a black center. This gerbera can easily be located on our pricelist.

There are other times, however, that that same florist is just looking for an orange gerbera (and they don't care if it's a dark orange color, a light orange color, black center, or green center) - as long as it's a fresh orange gerbera! Specifically for occassions like this, we've created ‘Metz Basics'.

It allows florists to buy there basic product line (lilies, tulips, callas, amaryllis, cymbidiums, hyacints, gerberas, and germinis) on color - not variety! This allows us the flexibility to get the florist the best deal available in the market that day without sacrificing quality.

11-12-08 Agora Group enters into the MFI Joint Venture

The Agora Group has decided that as of January 1st, 2009, to join as partner of Mondial Flower International (MFI). MFI was started in 2007 by Fleura and Metz. The purpose of MFI is to bundle knowledge and purchasing power, thereby optimizing its partners respective sourcing.

According to Gerd Nagels, CEO of the Agora Group, joining MFI is the right strategy to be able to leverage the internationalization and economies of scale that are occurring in the flower industry.

The board of MFI will be comprised of Richard Koenen (Metz, Chairman of the Board of MFI), Sidney Moll (Fleura) and Guy de Borger (Agora). MFI has locations in southern Europe, Africa, South America and North America. MFI purchases on behalf of more than 40,000 florists in the middle and high-end segment in Europe and North America.

The Agora Group supplies professional florists and garden centers via 20 cash & carry's in Belgium and France.

The Fleura Group, with 53 cash and carry's as well its direct export channel, is active in western and central Europe.

The Metz Group focuses on direct shipments to florists in western Europe and North America.

Metz Ecuador

Since October 2004 Victor van Dijk (30) a Dutchman from the Westland area, famous for it's flower production, has been running our Quito office in Ecuador, he has lived in Ecuador for 7 years and has vast knowledge of the growers and transportation. This familiarity with the area has worked well and Metz are now sending flowers to USA, Canada and Europe. These are of the highest quality being sourced from our own partner growers and packed by them in Metz Ecuador boxes.

Ecuador has many climate zones so a large variety of flowers can be produced from large headed roses, tropicals to summer flowers. The trend at the moment is for garden style, large headed roses and these can be obtained in a variety of colours and the highest quality. A capital E on the pricelist tells you that these are sourced from Ecuador and you will see are competively priced. So why not give them a try or some of the beautiful range of tropicals and summer flowers that are presently available.
